First time kayaking?
What to expect
If it’s your first time, don’t worry, everyone at the club, whatever their age or experience, is happy to help and offer encouragement.
Depending on who you’ve arranged your session with, they’ll let you know who to ask for when you arrive.
You’ll get help with collecting the necessary equipment and will be fully briefed before heading out onto the water with your coach.
What to bring
It is important you wear the correct clothing when you come paddling. What you wear should not saturate with water if you fall in. If you do not have gear designed for water sports, we recommend the following, depending on the conditions:
-
Pair of old trainers or plimsolls (You may well be standing in the river – your feet will get wet)
-
Tracksuit bottoms, leggings or shorts – Jeans or similar are not appropriate
-
T-shirt, sweatshirt, thermal top
-
Cagoule or a thin waterproof and windproof top
-
Towel
-
You will get wet, so it's a good idea to have a change of clothes ready to put on after the session.
You should also advise your coach of any medical conditions.
What we'll provide
We’ll supply all the necessary safety equipment, including buoyancy aids, helmets and the boat.
Sessions take place on calm, sheltered water.
Please note: paddlers should be confident in the water, able to remain calm, and follow instructions in the event of a capsize.
Finding us
We’re located at Lock Island, Ferry Lane, Shepperton, TW17 9LW. To reach the club, cross the lock, ideally using the left-hand side crossing. If the lock is in use (with boats passing through), you may need to use the right-hand side.
Once across, follow the path to the right of the small refreshment hut.
Within 20 feet, you’ll see the clubhouse on your right.

About the membership
We offer four types of membership at Shepperton Slalom Canoe Club.
Each membership is annual, and there are no additional fees throughout the year, unless you choose to participate in events held at Shepperton or other kayaking clubs.
For 2024-2025, the membership types/rates are:
Adults – £80
Junior/Youth (under 21) £60
Supporters/Parents – non paddling members £10
Boat Racks £40 - availability dependent
Safety is Paramount
Your safety and the safety of others is paramount. Membership of the club does not entitle you to take out boats if and when you feel like it. Until the coach has cleared you to paddle independently you may not be on the water in any boat that is stored at the club unless you are with a club member who has been approved by the club coaches to supervise other paddlers.
When you are on the water under the supervision of another paddler, you are expected to obey the instructions they give. They have the right to end any session.
Membership does not entitle you to supervise other paddlers on the water, only a club coach can decide that you have the ability to do this.
Water conditions at Shepperton can vary because of the water volume coming over the weir; your ability to paddle a boat in good conditions does not translate into an ability to paddle in all conditions. In winter we have conditions when even the most experienced paddlers choose not to go out on the water. You are advised to check with others if you are uncertain.

Apply for membership
The Steps
-
If you need to add more than one member, you must complete a separate form for each new member, submit it, and then proceed with the next one.
-
Once you have submitted your membership(s) form(s), you then need to transfer the membership fee.
-
You pay for all your memberships in one go, so if you've submitted two junior memberships, that would be 2 x £60, so £120 to transfer.
-
Then transfer the membership fee to the bank details below.
-
For the reference, add your surname, then either:
